I found a few sources of cut paper illustrations that I found intriguing. I studied Greek Mythological characters, and used many ancient statues for reference images.
After researching, I decided to emulate the “perfect body” style seen in ancient art. To do this, I made the characters semi realistic, all viewed in profile as many of the Greek gods were depicted.
After creating the characters, I did more research on the environments they would be in. For each scene, I wanted the characters to be interacting with some element. Poseidon is interacting with his trident and the ship, Hades with the fire, humans, and three-headed dog. Medusa with her bow and people that she has turned to stone, and Zeus with his chariot and lightning bolt.
After creating the scenes in illustrator, I brought all of the characters and scenes into Cinema 4D, resulting in tons of splines. After grouping them appropriately, I extruded them and moved them to gain depth. I then lit the scene and tested the shadows, as seen on the right. I then textured all of the characters and animated the sequence!
